The word "octopus" has its origin in the Greek language. It consists of two components:

[*]"Octo-" is the prefix, and it means "eight" in Greek.
[*]"Pus" is the root, which means "foot" in Greek.
So, "octopus" literally means "eight-footed" or "eight legs," which accurately describes the physical characteristics of these remarkable sea creatures.

The root "pus," meaning "foot" in Greek, appears in various words in the English language. Here are a few examples:

[*]"Podiatrist" - A medical professional specializing in the care and treatment of feet.
[*]"Octopod" - Referring to a member of the octopus family, emphasizing their eight legs.

The names of the months in many languages, including English, have historical origins that don't always align with their positions in the modern calendar. In the case of "October," its name comes from the Latin word "octo," which means "eight."

Originally, the Roman calendar started in March, making October the eighth month. However, the calendar was later reformed and January and February were added to the beginning of the year, making March the third month and pushing October to the tenth position. The names of the months were not changed to reflect this shift.

So, while "October" means "eighth," it's now the tenth month of the year because of historical changes to the calendar. The same logic applies to the names of some other months as well.
