The ugliest city in England 英国最丑的城市
Are there any ugly cities in your country? One of England's most unattractive cities is Slough. But why?
For years, Slough has been seen as England's ugliest city. Poet John Betjeman wrote in his 1937 poem Slough, "Mess up the mess they call a town!" "If you had a choice of Slough or anywhere else in the area, Slough would be the last town you'd come to" , said Dawn Lewis, who used to live there. "I grew up in Slough in the 1970s. If you want to know what Slough was like in the 1970s, go there now."
Let's take a closer look at Slough. The town is about 30 kilometres from central London. It is a heavily industrialized (工业化的) place full of office blocks. There is a famous area where many big companies built office buildings, for example, Amazon. Actually, the UK is full of towns like Slough. The problem is that Slough is surrounded(被围绕) by beautiful villages and pretty market towns, such as Windsor and Maidenhead and even Eton College. Slough is so ugly compared with its neighbours. People from near Slough avoid it if possible—why go to Slough when you can go to Windsor?
So with all this in mind, it's not as if Slough is a poor area, but it just seems to be unattractive. Its biggest problem is the crime rate(犯罪率), which is above the average standard in the UK.
Now the government is trying to change all that. Recently, it has just agreed to plant more trees in the high street after people complained that it "wasn't green enough". It has also proudly announced that the city would plan to be part of the Climate Neutral Network (气候中和网络). This network was founded by the United Nations in order to encourage countries and cities to take action and go green. So how will the city look like in the future? We'll have to wait and see.
